5.18.22 ONE SERVICE + TIME CHANGE

Dear Portico Church Members and Attenders,

Greetings! I hope you are all well and walking in the favor of the Lord!

I am writing to announce that beginning in June (6/5/22) we will have just ONE service, starting at 10 am.

Our church has been gathering in two services for almost two years. We originally added a service in the summer of 2020 when we were still meeting at Ballston Baptist church on Vermont St. The addition of a second service served the purpose of following social distancing guidelines that were issued at the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic. However, we continued to have a second service even after these guidelines were adjusted.

We moved to our current and permanent home at the beginning of 2021 and were unsure of how our church attendance would be influenced by the pandemic and new meeting location. As a result, we wanted to remain as flexible as possible and allow space to grow as we moved into a new neighborhood.

Now that we have a track record of meeting in our church building, we feel confident that a move to one service is currently what is best for the church!

Here are a few reasons why we are making this change:

  • Unity in Diversity. The unity of our church in the diversity of our members is demonstrated more fully when we gather as one body. We experienced this recently both during One Service Sunday in May and the Good Friday service.

  • We have enough room! Initially, we were unsure if there would be enough room for everyone to fit comfortably when we first moved into this building. We now can confidently anticipate that there are enough seats for everyone based upon our attendance over the last year and a half.

  • Volunteer capacity and demands. Moving to one service will make serving more accessible for the service teams and will help prevent burnout of volunteers as our teams will not have to provide service twice on a Sunday.

  • Church Engagement. Having one service gives greater opportunities for people in the church to know each other. We are a tight-knit community and one of the blessings of our size is that you can get to know a majority of other church members. Having one service will emphasize that strength and allow for church members across demographic differences to fellowship every week.

I hope that you all share in my excitement about the opportunity to worship at the same time. It is a grace from God, and not one that is always guaranteed (as we learned in the last two years). I also realize that all change comes with a cost and sacrifice. As we engage in a time change and shift to one service there will be opportunities to live out our love for one another.

Here are a couple of encouragements for you all to help us honor the Lord as we move forward:

  • “Addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.” (Ephesians 5:19-21). We can find joy in laying down our preferences for the good of our brothers and sisters. You may be getting up a little earlier than you would like, or staying a little later than you are used to. You may have a little one with a nap schedule disrupted. All of these are inconveniences but must not become stumbling blocks. Let us be known for our address to one another in song, responding to Christ’s work of redemption together.

  • Purposefully get to know each other. Before and after church services, make it a priority to get to know someone whom you’ve not met! Keep an eye out for new people or people you don’t know and pursue them. Take advantage of having everyone together by being with each other after church. Go out to lunch or invite someone over for lunch. All of these are ways that we as Christians should strive to keep the Sabbath holy.

  • If you aren’t currently serving, please join one of the service teams. You are needed! Service is a part of worship (Romans 12:1), so if you aren’t serving you might be missing out on a key way that our church body worships the Lord.

You all have been examples to me of what it looks like to be patient and loving during trying times. Thank you for that! Let’s continue to follow in the example of Christ as we make this change.

Warmly,
Pastor Nate Wagner

FAQs

When will this start?
Sunday, June 5 we will have one service starting at 10am.

Why 10:00am?
Because it has to be sometime! We see this as a sensible compromise between the two service times that will also give us the ability to make use of the building after our service but before the Hispanic congregation comes into the building around 1pm for their worship.

Will we have enough room?
Yes. The pews in our sanctuary seat about 150 adults. For the last 18 months we have averaged around 110 adults combined between both services.

Is this permanent?
We are planning to remain at one service until it would become abundantly clear that we are not fitting everyone in the sanctuary for worship. At that point, the Leader Team will reassess. Our church tends to grow at a steady rate, so we anticipate having time before needing to address capacity issues.

What about COVID?
As you all know, COVID and how our government and society decide to respond to COVID, are very fluid. We will continue to stay updated on guidance from the CDC and VA Dept. of Health. We will continue to livestream for anyone who does not feel comfortable being in person and masks will continue to be optional.

What does this mean for service team arrival times?
Your team leads will reach out to their teams to inform them of those details. If you don’t hear from your team lead, you can contact Joye Allison at jallison@porticoarlington.org.

1.29.22 MEMBER GATHERING RECAP

Dear Members and Friends of Portico,

On January 9 2022, Pastor Jason Conner announced during our Sunday services that he would be transitioning out of his role as our Lead Pastor to serve as the Lead Pastor for our sending-church, Portico Charlottesville. Most recently we shared our leadership transition plan during our Member Gathering on January 29, 2022. If you weren’t able to attend, we hope this letter will provide clarity and serve as an update as we move forward together.

The following is a summary of the Member Gathering:

Key Takeaways

  • Pastor Jason Conner will transition out of his role as our Lead Pastor on March 1, 2022, to serve as the Lead Pastor for our sending-church, Portico Charlottesville. This transition is hard and unexpected but aligned with God’s call for Jason and the needs of Portico Charlottesville.

  • Pastor Nate Wagner will serve as Lead Pastor Candidate for Portico Arlington with the intent of transitioning to permanent Lead Pastor within six months. Pastor Jonathan Reeve will lead Portico Arlington organizationally during Nate’s candidacy.

  • Our building has been given to us as a gift from Del Ray Baptist Church.

Our last Member Gathering was full of surprises. To be sure, there’s still some shock, frustration, and plenty of work to do, but God is at work among us.

Saying Goodbye

Saying goodbye is never easy. It’s always worse when you deeply love those you’re leaving. For the last ten years, I’ve served as a pastor at Portico Church Arlington. For eight of those years, I’ve served as your Lead Pastor. It’s impossible to express in a letter how much Christy and I have been blessed by our time here. Our lives have been indelibly shaped by the relationships, mission, and even the hard things that Portico Arlington has delivered. Even so, it’s clear that our time here has come to a close.

As you may have heard, Portico Charlottesville is in the midst of a leadership crisis. Four elders, including their founding pastor, have resigned. Portico Charlottesville is hurting, frustrated, and in need of immediate help. I’ve been asked to take on the role of Lead Pastor for Portico Charlottesville and I’ve accepted that call. In saying that I’m called to this new position I mean I have sought God’s will through his Word, prayer, counsel, and circumstances. Because Portico Arlington lost her founding pastor very early on, I have experience that will be helpful in serving Portico Charlottesville. Lastly, even though it’s very hard to leave, I do desire to be used by God in this way.

God always makes provision for his people and we are not the exception. In moving me to a new calling, God is moving some of our leaders into new roles.

Leadership Transition

God gives power for the purpose of serving others. Too often in the Church, power isn’t used to serve others but to serve personal preferences and agendas. I’m very happy to report that our leaders have handled my transition to Portico Charlottesville with grace, wisdom, and godly initiative. They have prayerfully sought out God’s good provision for this new season in Portico’s story and have found it.

Our plan and hope is to have the role of Lead Pastor be filled by our own Pastor Nate Wagner. Pastor Jonathan Reeve will move into the role of Executive Pastor, giving more focus to organizational leadership while still leading areas of Worship and Leadership. The onramp for this transition will involve a Lead Pastor Candidacy period for Nate of up to six months. During this time, Pastor Jonathan Reeve will be responsible for organizational leadership, giving Pastor Nate Wagner time to transition. A Lead Pastor Assessment Committee comprised of members will assist the Elder Team in evaluating Nate’s fit for this role. You can expect the Elder Team to put Nate forward for a Member Affirmation Vote at the end of this process (about six months). We believe in this process and ask for your continued grace and patience as we move forward together.

What I’ve been most impressed with during this season is the humility of our leaders and Members. When unwelcome news comes, the normal response is to retreat or make demands. The response of our leaders and Members has been to humbly seek the Lord together, expecting He will provide. Let’s continue this posture of patience and humility as we move forward together.

  Permanent Home

Del Ray Baptist Church has agreed to give us the building and the two homes on the property! Please join us in praising God for this kindness and the generosity of our brothers and sisters in Christ. We desire to be faithful with this gift for many years to come, witnessing to the power of the Gospel as we Unite People to Life in Christ.

There is an ongoing process taking place in transitioning ownership of the building from Del Ray to Portico. While that is happening, we have started to assess various needs and prioritize some immediate projects to maintain and refresh the building. Thank you all for your prayers, gifts, and support during our Homecoming Initiative. The Lord worked through all of it and we have been so encouraged to see his provision and care for us in these last five months. We will be using the money raised during that time for building repairs and projects and we will keep you informed about what that will look like at future member gatherings.

This new season will bring new opportunities, challenges, and situations for us to trust the Lord with. Remember how good God has been to us and continue to encourage each other to rely on him in the season to come.

1.16.22 COVID UPDATE

Portico Family,

As COVID cases begin to increase again with the Omicron variant, we wanted to bring an update to you all regarding Portico safety protocols for Sunday morning worship. Below is a reminder of our current policies:

  • Those who are fully vaccinated may attend services without a mask. Even so, all are welcome to utilize a mask for added protection.

  • If you are not fully vaccinated, it is recommended that you use a mask while indoors.

  • Children in service are not required to wear a mask.

  • Volunteers and children participating in Portico Kids (ages 4 and up) are required to wear a mask.

  • Children participating in Portico Kids (ages 2 to 3) are strongly recommended but not required to wear masks.

  • Regardless of your vaccination status, if you are experiencing COVID symptoms, please don’t attend services and consult your healthcare professional.

In addition, there are some other aspects put in place in our services to allow for added protection. We continue to have two Sunday morning services to allow people to have space in the sanctuary as they worship. We also continue to broadcast a livestream of our worship services, so all are able to participate even if they need to be at home.

We have masks available for adults and children who want them, and we have sealed communion pods for those who would prefer this option.

As we continue to navigate through this season, let’s remember to care for each other as the family God has made us to be. Be considerate of others' feelings even if they may differ from your own. And lastly, as many people are contracting COVID, reach out if you need help and be ready to serve those around you who are in need.

Thank you for your patience, as well as your commitment to one another and to Christ.

8.19.21 MEMBER GATHERING RECAP

The following is a summary of the Portico’s 8.19.2021 Member Gathering.

BUILDING UPDATE

Portico has been invited to submit a purchase proposal for the building we’ve been leasing since the beginning of 2021. We are presently in the process of negotiating a purchase with the owners. This is both an answer to prayer and a significant responsibility. Expect to hear more in the coming months. Please join us in praying for a solution that provides a stable base of ministry for generations.

UPDATED BYLAWS

Portico has newly revised and updated bylaws. Although rarely referred to, bylaws serve as a type of operations manual for churches and nonprofits. Bylaws are important because they hold our theological convictions and define how we carry out our mission as a church. Operationally speaking, you shouldn’t notice any day-to-day changes in the life of the church. We plan on enacting the updated bylaws in September. Members should’ve received a copy of the new bylaws by email. If you haven’t received a copy, please e-mail Starr Parnell (sparnell@porticoarlington.org). If you have any questions or comments, please contact Pastor Jason Conner (jconner@porticoarlington.org) or Elder Geoff Peck (gpeck@porticoarlington.org).

COVID UPDATE

There are no changes to COVID safety protocols at this time. We continue to align our protocols with the requirements of the State of Virginia. Here’s a summary of what we are asking Portico attenders to do;

  • Those who are fully vaccinated may attend services without a mask. Even so, all are welcome to utilize a mask for added protection.

  • If you are not fully vaccinated, it is recommended that you use a mask while indoors.

  • Children in service are not required to wear a mask.

  • Volunteers and children participating in Portico Kids (ages 4 and up) are required to wear masks.

  • Children participating in Portico Kids (ages 2-3) are strongly recommended but not required to wear masks.

  • Regardless of your vaccination status, If you are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms, please don’t attend service and consult your healthcare professional.

As you know, this is a fluid situation which can change rapidly. Thank you for your continued patience and understanding.

SABBATICAL LEAVE FOR PASTOR JASON CONNER

Pastor Jason Conner will be on a scheduled Sabbatical Leave for the months of September and October. A Sabbatical Leave is a significant hiatus from pastoral responsibilities for the express purpose of rest and renewal. Portico’s Sabbatical Leave policy has proven to be an investment in the health of our pastors and church. We are excited to see Jason and Christy engage this season of rest as they prepare for our road ahead.

5.20.21 COVID SAFETY PROCEDURES UPDATE

On May 14, Virginia Governor Ralph Northam signed Executive Order 79 (EO-79) which goes into effect at midnight on May 28. EO-79 ends most COVID restrictions in Virginia, removing the face covering requirement for those who are fully vaccinated, while stating that unvaccinated people aged 5 and older should continue to use a mask. In light of EO-79 and CDC guidance, Portico Church Arlington will cease COVID safety procedures beginning Sunday, May 30. This means that we will no longer:

  • Require registration for attendance.

  • Take your temperature prior to entrance.

  • Require a mask for entry.

  • Escort you to a seat.

  • Require social distancing.

The Portico Kids ministry will continue to align with CDC recommendations for K-12 schools at this time. This means that volunteers and participating children will be required to wear a mask.

WHY ARE WE CHANGING OUR COVID SAFETY PROCEDURES NOW?
From the beginning of the pandemic, our approach has been to align Portico procedures and protocols with the requirements of the Federal Government and more specifically, the State of Virginia. Our approach remains the same. More importantly, we believe that following the guidance of EO-79 (and the CDC) is safe and reasonable.

WHAT ARE WE ASKING PORTICO ATTENDERS TO DO?
In short, we are asking attenders to abide by EO-79.

  • Feel free to attend worship without a mask if you are fully vaccinated (2 weeks since final dose).

  • If you are not fully vaccinated, you are strongly encouraged to wear a mask. You will not be asked to verify your vaccination status.

  • You are free to continue wearing a mask in service for any reason. Masks are not banned.

  • Regardless of your vaccination status, If you are experiencing COVID-19 symptoms, please don’t attend service and consult your healthcare professional.

WHAT ABOUT KIDS IN SERVICE?
We are not asking children to wear a mask during service. Parents are responsible for the safety of their children and therefore, must decide if they want their children 5 and older to use a mask in service.HOW

SHOULD WE FEEL/THINK ABOUT THIS?
Thankful. We have prayed repeatedly for God’s mercy in reducing the impact of COVID-19. Virginia has seen the virus numbers plunge allowing for the relaxing of restrictions. This gives us reason to praise God.

Humble. This information may irritate you or be a cause for celebration. All of us have differing experiences and convictions when it comes to handling COVID-19. It’s important we don’t idolize our personal preferences, fears, or freedoms. God calls us to “Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus…” (Philippians 2:3–5 ESV)

Unified. “Let all that you do be done in love.” (1 Corinthians 16:14 ESV). There will be people in our service who are wearing masks and those without masks – all for various reasons. Don’t make conclusions or judgements. Don’t let differing convictions on how to approach COVID-19 become a dividing wall of hostility. Do extend grace, understanding, and seek to outdo one another in showing honor (Romans 12:10). I cannot overstate how proud I am at how you’ve handled the various difficulties COVID-19 has presented our church over the past year. Everyone has complied without complaining, going above and beyond to serve one another. You’ve been a vivid picture of how Jesus calls his people to live together in gospel-unity. Thank you.

As always, thank you for your patience and understanding.

Yours In Christ,

Jason Conner
Lead Pastor
Portico Church Arlington

12.24.20 NEW BUILDING ANNOUNCEMENT

Portico Family,

We wanted to provide you with an update regarding our worship location for Sunday morning worship services and ministry operations.

  • Portico Church Arlington has entered into a lease agreement for a new worship location. This new building will serve as our worship space for in-person gatherings and weekly ministry operations.

  • The address is: 800 N Illinois St, Arlington, VA 22205. This location is 1.2 miles from our present building.

  • Preparations are underway to transition our worship service and operations to the new location. In-person worship gatherings are tentatively scheduled to begin at the new location on Sunday, January 10. Please stay tuned for updated information.

As mentioned at our December Member Gathering, the building we have worshipped in for the past 18 months has been sold. December is our last month of occupancy. Knowing this, we prayed together during our Member Gathering for a new home and God immediately provided! This new location is an answer to your prayer.

How should we respond to this provision of a new building?

First and foremost, we should respond with gratitude and thanksgiving. The circumstances surrounding the loss of our present building and the acquisition of this new building make it blatantly clear that God has moved on our behalf. So, thank Him and prepare to enjoy this provision. The Pandemic has reminded us how debilitating isolation is. Let’s praise God for a place we can gather as His people.

Second, be patient. As with all new things, there will be a season of setting up and re-establishing our ministries in the new building. Plan on working with your ministry/service team in making this place our home.

Lastly, be ready. God has provided a new place to carry out the call He’s given us of Uniting People to Life in Christ. Join me in taking full responsibility for our future. Let’s use this gift to glorify God.

Yours in Christ,

Jason Conner
Lead Pastor
Portico Church Arlington

12.3.20 MEMBER GATHERING RECAP

Dear Covenant Members,

Some years are about new beginnings. Some years reward us with the fruit of previous labor. And, some years are about survival. Such is 2020. As we approach the end of a trying year, let’s take a moment to do more than celebrate its end. Let’s put our eyes on the story that God is writing in our church and lives.

At the end of 2019, we put forward this challenge; Let’s be part of something in 2020 that only God can do. It’s safe to say that none of us envisioned a pandemic, stay-at-home orders, and ongoing uncertainty. Even though our plans quickly became ashes, God’s plan and purposes for His people are unshakeable.

The truth is, in 2020 we were part of something that only God could do. We have arrived at the end of this year with our faith, our community and our church intact. God’s sovereign preservation of His people is never an unremarkable thing. It is a loving act of His gracious power. Just as silver is refined in the sustained heat of the crucible, Portico was tried and tested. Only our glorious God can translate trials into strength. “In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.” (1 Peter 1:6–7 ESV). This is the story that God is writing in our church and lives.

To be sure, this year has been difficult for everyone. Our first instinct is to turn the page and simply try to move on from the pain and loss brought on by 2020. While we must acknowledge our suffering, we cannot miss how God has continued to work in our church and community.

2020: Review and Celebration

Let’s take a moment to celebrate all that God has done in 2020 as we look to our future.

  • Jackie Black joined our team to lead Portico Kids and establish a counseling ministry that serves the local community. Her extensive training and experience has been a blessing beyond all expectations. Welcome Jackie!

  • Livestream worship services were immediately launched as the pandemic grew in March. Volunteers kept us worshiping during our 17 week shutdown. Even now, the Production Team and Media Team find new ways of keeping us connected and moving forward together.

  • Various volunteers stepped up to serve as the pandemic created new needs.

  • 10 year anniversary. Easter Sunday, 2020 marked our 10th year as a church!

  • 3 Baptisms.

  • 3 new deacons joined the Deacon Team.

  • 22 new Covenant Members joined our family.

  • We grew to 120 members (12% net increase)

  • Our July 12 relaunch of in-person gatherings saw an average weekly attendance of 100+ people between 2 services.

  • Livestream participation is estimated at 250+ people weekly.

  • We enjoyed a stable worship location at the 1031 N Vermont St building for much longer than anticipated.

  • Portico received the “Ellen M. Bozeman Award” from The Alliance for Housing Solutions for our Community Group’s participation in the Church at Work cooperative which raised $300,000 to keep people in their homes by providing rent assistance.

What story do these highlights tell? God is right here with us. His plan of redeeming the world through the hope that is offered In Christ Jesus is not on standby during times of turmoil. God is still moving people from death to life through faith in Jesus and Portico Church Arlington has the privilege of being part of that story. That is worth celebrating.

2021: Moving Forward

So, how are we going to use the resources, opportunities, and open doors God has given us? In times like these, we have two options before us. 1) Focus on protecting what we have. 2) Use what we have to reach the world with the hope of the Gospel. The former is about fear and self-preservation. The latter is the mission Jesus handed to His Church. So, let’s use what we have to reach the world with the hope of the Gospel.

Our posture towards 2021 is characterized by clarity, simplicity, and unity. We must clarify what matters most – simplify our ministries around those commitments – and unify our church in moving forward. This is a good time to get back to the staples of redeemed living: teaching, fellowship, generosity, all wrapped in prayer.

The three words that best describe where God is leading Portico in 2021 are: Grow, Give, Pray.

GROW

Take ownership of your faith. It’s true that the Church attracts people for many reasons; friendship, connection, and learning the wisdom of the Bible to name a few. Even so, one of the biggest risks in times of turmoil is unbelief. When life is unstable we are tempted to wonder if God cares and begin drifting away. But Jesus calls us to approach His Word like we approach food. Consume it. Love it.  Be filled with it. Jesus is not only our Savior but our Teacher as well. So, in 2021 let’s commit to moving from milk to solid food. Here are a few ways you can grow with us in 2021.

  • Stay connected. Nobody grows alone. Join us for in-person worship when it’s available and safe for you. Until then, participate in our weekly livestream service.

  • Pursue membership. Membership is a wonderful and weighty commitment that reflects the nature of the Church – a committed family. Sign up for Foundations in 2021.

  • Portico U [NEW!]. 2020 has made the home the new hub. We work, learn, and spend a lot of time in our homes. So let’s make the home a platform for discipleship. Beginning in January, we will start a weekly, interactive teaching event on a weeknight designed to increase our Biblical and theological literacy. This event will be livestreamed and be available for in-person attendance as well. Get equipped for life.

GIVE

Take ownership of your place in this family by serving needs in our community. One of our biggest temptations in times of loss is to focus on self and turn inward. Everybody does it. But, as those who have experienced the unending love and grace of God, we are called to look outward and serve others in times of loss. Since God is our treasure, we are supremely positioned to meet needs. Here are a few ways you can give in 2021.

  • Give financially: Give to Portico’s general fund to further the Gospel. Give to Portico’s Mercy Fund to meet the needs of people in our church body and local community.

  • Give time: Step up to serve on a ministry team.

  • Arlington Bridge Builders: The pandemic has greatly impacted parts of our local community. Arlington Bridge Builders resources communities in need with food, assistance and Gospel-hope. Consider serving on a food distribution team.

  • Assist: Assist encourages, educates, and empowers women and men to make life-giving decisions for themselves and their unborn children. Consider purchasing an item off of their Christmas Wish List to help a family.

  • Project Belong: Project Belong inspires, recruits, and resources the local church in Northern Virginia to care for vulnerable children with the love of Christ. Consider joining a training in January to learn how you can make a difference. Contact Jessie Moser at jmoser@porticoarlington.org to learn more.

PRAY

Take ownership of the mission by first committing to prayer. Planning without prayer is presumptuous. Times of uncertainty can temp us to rely on our own power and understanding. Jesus has opened up access to the Father and we are called to “...with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” (Hebrews 4:16 ESV). Here’s how you can join us in prayer in 2021.

  • Pray 30. Portico Church Arlington will begin the year by committing to pray for 30 minutes for 30 days. Our goal is to establish a pattern of dependence on God. Expect to hear more in the coming weeks.

As many of you know, Christy and I contracted COVID-19 in November. For the first time in the 8+ years of serving at Portico, we found ourselves entirely dependent on this community. During our sickness we were loved, cared for, and treated like family. It was such a powerful reminder of what God has done in planting Portico Church Arlington. He has made us all “fellow heirs with Christ”. In belonging to God we also belong to one another. As un-fun as the virus was, God used this experience to renew our love for His Gospel and passion for His Church.

2020 is about more than survival – it’s about building us up in the hope that is in Christ alone. This is the story God is writing in our church and lives. Uniting People to Life in Christ. Let’s live it.

Yours in Christ,

Jason Conner

Lead Pastor

Portico Church Arlington

Ps. Many of you prayed with us during the Member Gathering livestream for God to provide a new home for Portico. Great news. God answered that prayer! We have a new building! We are so excited for what this provision means for the life of our church. Stayed tuned. More information to follow soon.

JUNE 25 MEMBER GATHERING RECAP

On Thursday, June 25 Portico Church Arlington conducted a livestream Member Gathering with Q+A. The following is a summary of the session.

When will we resume physical worship gatherings?
Sunday, July 12

Why now?
We are confident we can comply with all orders and CDC guidelines for religious services. This date allows us enough time to prepare our staff and volunteer teams in the required procedures for cleaning and operating a physical gathering. Lastly, we wanted to see some downward momentum in the virus transmission rate.

Who should come?
Everyone one who is well and ready should plan on attending. If you are sick, exhibiting symptoms or have COVID-19, please do not attend. Here’s CDC guidance on wellness. If you are at risk or are in regular contact with someone who is, please consult your medical professional before attending.

What should I expect at the worship gathering?

  • We will have 2 services; 9:00 and 11:00 am. The duration of each service will be 1 hour or less.

  • Masks are required for entry into the building for those who are 10 years of age or older.

  • The Portico Kids ministry is not operating at this time however, we will have a Mom’s Room and a Wriggle Room for parents to utilize during service. All children are welcome in service.

  • Social distancing protocols are in effect which require 6 feet of separation between individuals who are not in the same household. Families and households may sit together. Others, should leave a buffer of 2 seats between them.

  • No coffee service is available at this time and Communion elements are pre-packaged.

Do we need to register for service?
Yes. Social distancing limits the amount of people we can handle at any one service. Therefore, we are asking everyone to register for either the 9:00 or 11:00 service. This will help us stay safe and accommodate everyone. Although this all sounds very daunting, please remember we gather to be together in God’s presence. So, come to worship God and expect to experience His power and presence. As always, please let us know if you have any questions.

RESUMING PHYSICAL WORSHIP JULY 12

We are excited to announce that on Sunday, July 12 Portico Church Arlington will resume physical worship gatherings. The decision to resume services takes into account our ability to successfully adhere to Federal, State and local orders/guidelines. MEMBER GATHERING LIVE RECAP

Dear Friends,

On Thursday, May 14 Portico Church Arlington conducted a livestream Member Gathering with Q+A. The following is a summary with key takeaways from the session.

Present Situation

In response to COVID-19, Portico Arlington suspended physical worship gatherings in March like churches across our country and world. This response is without precedent in our age. Even still, we have not ceased being Portico Arlington. The Church is not a building, location or even a gathering. The Church is God’s people who are saved by grace through faith. As God’s people have done throughout the ages, we will trust God and adjust to the circumstances around us.

Key takeaways:

  • We will continue livestreaming worship service for the purpose of “gathering together” under the word and worship. Until such time as we can physically gather together, tune in and worship with us on Sunday mornings.

  • Community Groups will continue meeting via video conferencing. Stay connected to your CG’s.

  • Portico Kids will receive supplemental material for the purpose of family enrichment.

  • Various options are being offered to build up the church (Weekday in the Word, teachings, etc.).

  • First quarter giving was strong but has weakened in recent weeks. Mercy Fund giving is strong and being used to help those in need.

Moving Forward

Being physically present in gathered worship is an irreducible part of being the Church. We are presently making plans to resume gathered worship as soon as it is safe, legal, reasonable and wise. This will involve changes in our Sunday service to comply with government orders, guidelines and best practices. Because circumstances and guidance change often, we have no firm date of return. We will keep you informed of future plans as they form up. Please be prepared to practice herd humility. Realize that you will be sharing space with people who have very different perspectives, approaches and convictions about how COVID-19 should be handled. Remember, our unity is not found in our approach to this pandemic but rather in our status as co-heirs with Christ. Let’s make it our practice to offer grace and understanding at all times. “Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus…” (Philippians 2:3–5).

Key takeaways:

  • No firm date for a return to physical worship at this time.

  • We are consulting with professionals, other local churches and network leaders (Acts 29) in preparing our return to physical worship.

  • Be praying for Portico leaders and the leaders of national and local government.

  • We will continue to livestream Sunday service even as we transition back to a physical worship service.

We Can Do This

God has prepared Portico for this season. As His Church, we are called to trust the certainty of God’s provision in uncertain times. Every generation has a defining moment. This is ours. Instead of simply enduring this season let’s embrace it, knowing that God’s purposes for us cannot be destroyed when we walk together in faith. This will require courage, an attitude of humility and a willingness to serve others who have been affected by this pandemic. This is God’s will for his Church. Let’s walk in it.

Key takeaways:

  • Look for ways to serve one another.

  • Be prepared to go the distance by serving those who will be deeply affected by COVID-19.

  • Rest in God’s provision and purpose.

As always, it is a joy to serve our Risen King with you. Looking forward to all that God has for us.

Yours In Christ,

Jason Conner
