A portico is a porch. So it seems appropriate that Portico Church Arlington began in the spring of 2010, on the porch of a small Clarendon bungalow where a core group of 37 met to share Rocklands barbecue and their longing to Know Christ, Build the Church, and Tell His Story. The first weeks of meeting together were dedicated to laying a solid foundation through prayer, Biblical-teaching, fellowship and worship. Our desire for the gospel to transform us, the city, and the world grew and so did our gathering.
On May 3, 2010, we launched a Sunday morning service in one of the art galleries at The Arlington Arts Center on Wilson Boulevard. Since then, we have seen our vision realized and advancing. With over 150 regularly attending, Portico Arlington soon outgrew The Arts Center. In April 2011, Portico began meeting weekly at Arlington’s Francis Scott Key Elementary School.
We may have outgrown an actual porch, but we still believe the Church should resemble a “front porch” with an outward face. We want to be a place of connection where people are invited and welcomed. Portico Church exists as a place of gathering and authentic community in our city for those who know Jesus and those who are yet to know Him.
